Apart from knowing how to apply perfumes for maximum benefits, knowing exactly how much perfume to apply is quite tricky too. More importantly, once the mistake is made, you need to find a way to remove excessive perfume from your clothes or skin.
When it comes to perfume, less is more. You don’t want the heavy smell of fragrance to precede you before you get into the room, and neither do you want the fragrance to remain way after you have left the room.
You can easily overdo the fragrance application with those one or two extra spritzes. However, there’s a way to fix it without getting in the shower or washing those clothes. That’s what this article discusses.

If you know that you always tend to over-apply perfume on your skin or clothes, you can try using a fragrance mist or cloud instead. That will ensure even and light application all over your body.
Why do you tend to apply excessive perfume
1. It’s easy to apply too much perfume because you easily get desensitized to your everyday perfumes. This makes you less aware of that scent, so you tend to apply it excessively just to get a whiff of the scent.
But what you don’t know is that the rest of us can already smell the scent even before you added that extra spritz.
2. Sometimes you use too much perfume because you want to increase the wear time of the fragrance. But applying excessive perfume does not give longer wear time. The wear time remains the same. It is better to reapply the perfume after the scent has disappeared.
How to know if you have applied too much perfume
1. Apply the perfume as you normally apply it to your skin. Wait for five seconds and place a tissue strip on the spot where you applied the perfume. If the tissue sticks, it means that you have applied too much perfume on that spot.
2. If people are coughing, sneezing, or holding their breaths immediately after you get into the room, maybe you should check the amount of perfume that you’re wearing. This is necessary because you could even end up triggering their fragrance allergies and sensitivities.
3. If someone can smell your perfume without coming close to you, that may be an indication that you’re wearing too much fragrance.
How to remove excessive perfume from your skin
- Dip a cotton ball in rubbing alcohol and tap it on the areas where you think you applied excessive perfume. This will instantly dilute and temper the strong smell.
- You may also dab at the perfumed clothing with unscented baby wipes. To remove excessive perfume from your skin, gently tap on the spot with an unscented body lotion.
- Iron the excessively perfumed clothes on low heat. This will speed up the evaporation process. Make sure that the fabric is compatible with ironing.
- You can also use a blow dryer to get rid of the heavy smell of the perfume. It might interest you to know that 15 minutes of blow drying will give the effect of one day of wearing that cloth.
- Always try applying the perfume at a little bit of distance from your skin or clothes. Hold the bottle at least six inches from your skin before spritzing.
